Demonstration Alert – U. S. Embassy Dili, Timor-Leste (November 6, 2018)
Location: In front of Parliament, centered on the park to the west of the National University
Event: The Timor-Leste Students Movement (MUTL) continue to protest against the purchase of new vehicles for Members of Parliament. These intermittent demonstrations are a continuation of those initiated on Friday, October 26.
Expect heavy pedestrian traffic, possible roadblocks, and a heavy police presence. In previous protests, protestors threw stones at vehicles and harassed bystanders.
Protests could continue sporadically over the coming weeks. If you see a protest happening, remember do to the following:
- Avoid the areas of the demonstrations.
- Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests.
- Monitor local media for updates.
