Health Alert: U.S. Embassy Dili, Timor-Leste (April 29, 2021)

Event:  The U.S. Embassy continues to monitor the rapidly changing conditions due to COVID-19 in Timor-Leste and will continue to share information and include pertinent new information in bold for quick reference.

Country-Specific Information:

A State of Emergency has been renewed for all of Timor-Leste through 23:59 on June 1.  Specific requirements of and additional information about the State of Emergency can be found at the Embassy’s COVID-19 webpage.  

On April 29, the Government of Timor-Leste (GOTL) announced the imposition of a general home confinement of all persons residing or currently residing in the municipality of Dili, from 00:00 hours on April 30, 2021, to 23:59 hours on May 13, 2021. Additional information about this directive, including exceptions, is available here.

The GOTL also announced that travel by land, sea, or air between the municipalities of Ainaro, Baucau, Covalima, Díli, Ermera, and Viqueque were further restricted until 23:59 hours on May 16, 2021. Travel between the municipalities of Lautém, Liquiça, and Manufahi, and other Timor-Leste municipalities, is similarly restricted between 00:00 hours of April 30, 2021, and 23:59 hours on May 16, 2021.

Travel is restricted between these municipalities and other administrative constituencies, except in cases duly substantiated by reasons of public security, public health, humanitarian assistance, maintenance of public supply systems, or the realization of the public interest.

During the enforcement periods, U.S. citizens are advised to limit outdoor movements as much as possible and should be prepared to provide explanation to the PNTL if requested. U.S. citizens are cautioned that the GOTL may impose criminal penalties for non-compliance to its announced directives.

 U.S. citizens are advised to continue to practice preventative measures, including wearing face masks and practicing social distancing, and to monitor local news and resources for potential travel restrictions.
