Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Demonstration Planned in Dili

This message is being issued to alert U.S. citizens residing in, or traveling to Timor-Leste that local media reports that there is a demonstration planned in Dili for August 5 at 3 PM in front of the Australian Embassy on Comoro Road. The U.S. Embassy recommends that U.S. citizens avoid the area of the demonstration and remain alert to the possibility of other unannounced demonstrations in the days surrounding the planned event.

Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence. Avoid areas where demonstrations are taking place and exercise caution when in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.

Review your personal security plans, remain aware of your surroundings, including local events, and monitor local news stations for updates. Be vigilant and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security.
