Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Government of Timor-Leste Immigration Operation

The Government of Timor-Leste has advised the U.S. Embassy in Dili that the Immigration Services of the Ministry of the Interior will be conducting an operation that may include setting up checkpoints and spot checks of identification, particularly for foreign residents and visitors. Although the Embassy has no other information at this time, we advise U.S. citizens to carry their passports at all times.

We strongly recommend that U.S. citizens traveling to or residing in Timor-Leste enroll in the Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) at travel.state.gov. STEP enrollment gives you the latest security updates, and makes it easier for the U.S. embassy or nearest U.S. consulate to contact you in an emergency. If you do not have Internet access, enroll directly with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.Regularly monitor the State Department’s website, where you can find current Travel Warnings, Travel Alerts, and the Worldwide Caution.
